About Phonovention
The first Phonovention took place at Jackson, Michigan in August 1979, sponsored by the Michigan Antique Phonograph Society (MAPS), and has been held in the upper midwest annually through 2007. In 2008, the Indiana chapter of MAPS (the Hoosier Antique Phonograph Society, or HAPS) hosted the event for the first time. Phonovention 2009 is again sponsored by HAPS and will be held at the National Military History Center in Auburn, Indiana (near Fort Wayne). With a full slate of presentations, vendor tables, and a live acoustic recording event, it promises to be the most exciting Phonovention to date.
Peter Dilg, well-known expert acoustic recording engineer, will record the world- premiere brass quintet performance of “The Phonovention Rag” onto wax cylinder. This cylinder record will later be buried in a time capsule for 100 years at the Edison Birthplace Museum in Milan, Ohio. The second wax cylinder recording of this performance will be auctioned to the highest bidder. Don’t miss your chance at owning a piece of history.
In addition to the live recording session, Phonovention 2009 features a number of educational presentations, including a keynote by Mr. Dilg in which he discusses his experiences recording live performances to cylinder. Additionally, there will be a wide variety of record, phonograph, and related vendors, as well as displays showcasing the prizes of some private collections. Reserve your spot today and Come be a part of History!
